Derek Brown

From his 30+ million views across social media to his appearance on international television and NPR’s Weekend Edition, Billboard-charting saxophonist/innovator Derek Brown and his one-of-a-kind solo “BEATBoX SAX” project has been exploding across the world music scene.

Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects, saxophone innovator Derek Brown’s unique playing style must be seen to be believed!
As described by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow, Brown performs unaccompanied solos that occasionally make one recall Bobby McFerrin in his early prime and the great saxophonist Eddie Harris . . . utilizing slap-tonguing, circular breathing, a wide interest in musical styles and dazzling coordination to create rather unique music."

Derek has performed solo concerts in all 50 United States and over 25 countries around the world (almost 200 international shows). Known for his boundless energy on stage, creative audience interaction, and musical depth, Derek’s live shows always surprise and delight. His ongoing “BEATBoXSAX” music videos and tutorials on YouTube have been enormously popular among saxophonists and music lovers alike (over 150,000 YouTube subscriptions), leading to endorsements with Legere, JodyJazz, P. Mauriat, BG France, and AKG.

Previously the director of jazz studies at Abilene Christian University for six years, Derek received his BM in Music Performance (Classical and Jazz) from Hope College in 2006 and hgis MM in Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinatti, College-Conservatory of Music in 2008.

MINAS: Orlando Haddad and Patricia King Haddad

Orlando Haddad and Patricia King formed Minas in 1978 at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Minas takes Brazilian and American roots to create a sound that is innovative, from ballads tinged with melancholic traits of Blues and Choro to upbeat Bossa Nova Sambas elaborated with instrumental jazz improvisation, scat singing and whimsical whistling.

Orlando: In addition to songs recorded with Minas, Orlando has written 20th Century-style works: 2 song cycles, a chamber piece (Transparancies, performed by Rèlache),  and music for Live Connections presented by Minas and the baroque ensemble Melomanie. Currently Orlando is writing a featured piece for Orchestra 2001.

Patricia: Beyond writing, performing, recording with MINAS, Patricia has written a published book, La Giara (The Water Jug) and musical theatre work inspired by the story of her Sicilian family’s emigration to America.

L’Maan Tziyon

Music by Drora Havkin, arr. Charles Davidson

For Zion's sake I will not keep silent;

and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest,

Until her triumph goes forth as brightness,

and her salvation as a torch that burns.

And the nations shall see your triumph,

and all kings your glory.

Adijo Kerida

Arr. by Josh Jacobson

Tango Dancers: Meredith Klein and Andres Amarilla

Guitar: Patricio Acevedo

Goodbye, goodbye beloved,

I don't want this life

because you've turned it bitter.

When your mother gave birth to you

and took you from the world,

she didn't give you a heart

to love another.

Goodbye, goodbye beloved,

I don't want this life

because you've turned it bitter.

Go, look for another love

open other doors,1

wait for the love of another2

to me you're dead.

Jari Piper

Jari Piper is a Canadian/American Tbilisi based cellist from Alaska. Upon finishing music school at McGill University, he moved to Istanbul and became a street musician playing on the ferryboats transporting passengers across the bosphorus from Europe to Asia. He then took a job as Principal cello in the Georgian Sinfonietta, a baroque orchestra in Tbilisi Georgia, and now is a member of the Georgian Philharmonic orchestra. He tried to go back to music school this year but found himself feeling like he had to do something else, so now he's learning songs and singing on the cello and learning how to make furniture.
